Jelliroll, Inc's recent publication of Sugared and Spiced 100 Monologues for Girls speaks to pre-teens and teens with humor and poignancy about friendship, family, and dreams, but one monologue in particular stands out as we are currently witnessing the first female to actually vie for the role of U.S. President.
The monologue, entitled Madam President, is the speech of one young girl who plans to one day hear those words "Madam President." She dreams of sitting in the Oval Office and knowing what it is like to be the Commander-in-Chief. "This is not something I take lightly," she says. "I've done a lot of reading and I know that every day I'm laying the foundation for my future. So, if that's what I really want - and it is - I need to start working toward it now."
What great advice for young girls today. As we watch the televised debates, we can only imagine a world in which one day there are many women on the stage instead of one. The women that can make that happen are sitting in our school rooms today.
Let's hope some of them pick up a copy of this terrifically inspiring book and as the character in the monologue says, start "laying the foundation" for their future!
